The history of Leverkusen as a city is closely linked to the evolution of the global company Bayer AG. The apothecary Carl Leverkus, founder of the Ultramarin-Farbenfabrik manufacturing ultramarine dyes, gave the city its name.

In 1891, the Eberfeld company "Farbenfabriken vorm. Friedr. Bayer & Co." bought Leverkus's factory to expand its chemical line. Since 1912, Leverkusen has been its headquarters.

The world's largest neon sign 

The Bayer cross, the global group's symbol and a trademark visible from afar, rises over the city's environs. With a diameter of fifty metres, it hangs 120 metres up in the air. It is recorded in Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest neon sign.

The world of chemistry

Divided into eight multimedia subject areas, the worlds of chemistry and pharmacy are brought home to interested visitors to the Bayer AG Communication Centre. The so-called BayKomm serves as an interface between the company and society.
